Spine Series

Notes from my summer studio:

Tree trunks - Supports - Spines - Reaching up

Branches - Reaching out

Copper - Heat - Energy

Earth's electric charge rising towards the sky

Vertebrae - Bristling Nerves

Individual tree - Forest together

A crowded Piazza - Single figures

This summer I have been creating these sculptures by hammering copper nails into slender tree trunks, and grouping the individual pieces in the forest where they originated.

These sculptures are related to my earlier imaginary landscapes made by hammering low reliefs onto sheets of copper.

The metallic sheen of the nails, fluctuating with the changing light of the day might suggest electric charges moving between the ground and the air and between the individual sculptures.

The first two images are a view of the grouping and a detail showing the surface. The third image came up in my mind once I saw them installed.
